There's currently a game-breaking bug where if you run from the final monster on the first turn, you don't encounter an important cutscene... Please select "FIGHT" when you encounter the monster at the top of the platforms. _(:3 / L )_

Rise is a narrative 2D platformer with an RPG turn-based battle system.

This game was made in 10 weeks using Phaser C.E. for UCSC's CMPM 120 Fall 2019 course. The theme of the game is "delicate," which we explore in contrast to "strength." We wanted to emphasize how even the strongest people may be delicate on the inside, and that being delicate doesn't mean you can't find your own inner strength.

Some things we implemented that you might've missed!!

  • The expressions of the protagonist sprite change depending on where you are on the stage!
  • The first 2 enemies are supposed to be typical fantasy RPG type monsters, but the later enemies represent more abstract concepts.
    • Eyeball Monster = The world watching your every move (either with adoration or judgment).
    • Speech Bubble Monster = Gossip/what people think of you.
    • Bed Monster = How difficult it can be to even just get out of bed sometimes.
  • Enemies miss attacks at the beginning because the protagonist is really physically powerful. However, the later enemies (and the protagonist) miss attacks because they're not actual monsters but rather ideas that harm you mentally.
    • This is why the screen darkens if you continue to fight the abstract enemies, as opposed to the protagonist's HP bar going down.
  • The game was originally fantasy-themed because we wanted to show how the protagonist's confidence is fake, but we didn't have time to implement a more realistic setting for the end scene. ^_T;;

Well this game really shows that you should never give up! This was very fun and I liked the character and art style of the game. The music was also so fitting an overall it was a very enjoyable experience :D I do believe there's a lot of potential in this game :)

I don't know if you've heard of Game Development World Championship before (gdwc2019) but it's a competition for indie game developers where they can submit their games and it's free! It's great if you want some more visibility for the game and it only takes a couple of minutes to join :)
